Tail Docking Ban In The UK April 2007. « Thread Started on Feb 24, 2008, 10:07am »
For information purposes & for the benefit of overseas members who may not be familiar with the Docking Ban in the UK, i am posting the following link to the Department For Environment Food And Rural Affairs (DEFRA) which sets out the guidelines of the new ligislation brought into force in April 2007 which made it an offence to continue to dock tails of any traditionally docked breeds of dog unless it can be proven that the dog is intended to be used for working purposes.
Some people have been prosecuted under the new legislation for continuing the practice of docking illegaly but evidence does suggest the majority of breeders are observing the new laws & most vets will not agree to dog new puppies for fear of legal procedings being taken against them.
That said there are still dogs being docked after the ban that i personally have seen in public & it has been suggested that at least some people may be using loopholes to get round the law by taking pups to be docked in the Irish republic where the practice has not been outlawed as such.
You can read about the legislation now in place in the UK at this link -
